Full Time Executive Management in India – A Lot to Improvise

GMAT, essays, applications, preparation, rejection, selection, loan application, mara-mari, shifting to new place with family – sounds familiar? Thats how one year MBA starts. Jump into the unknown often. Study when you have really stopped even reading the news paper! When all you do regularly is buy vegetables / fruits for kitchen and play with your kid(s), or maybe wife? Whatever. (Sorry for writing male oriented blog but my assumption is that almost 90% of exec-MBA students are male)

One year MBA is the new trend in India but not yet trendy enough. Management courses in India usually tend to be acad oriented. Well, which course is not acad oriented in India? Right from childhood, I have seen the same tendency everywhere. Study, study, study. No one really cares about integral development. Jobs, the only aim. Entrepreneurship? Well only if you are really bad enough not to get a decent job. Losers? be entrepreneur. Winner? get a plum job man!

If you assume that Executive MBA courses are strongly industry oriented and would have strong components of career planning, you are wrong. These courses have yet to evolve to the desired level, across all schools in India. Looks like its time to introduce Activity Based Learning even in management school ensuring development of right side brain as well. Someone listening in primary education? iDiscoveri has a business opportunity here!

Have a look at the recommendations I have compiled based upon the feedbacks from my friends doing executive management courses across many schools in India –

MBA in Europe/UK means 1 yr, and AFAIK it is more focused to academics(IMD may be an exception). European industry is also perpared for absorbing the passouts.

USA has clear cut demarkation between 1 yr and 2 yr MBA. Typical MBA is 2 yr which is more about acads and trainings. Exe-MBA(1 yr) is for seniors exclusively (10+ work-ex) and focused more towards hands-on discussions and industrial trainings. US industry is mature enough to absorb and honour exe-MBA candidates.

Unfortunately in India there is a big gap between industry and institutes regarding exe-MBA. Industry is inclined more towards 2 yr MBA and not at all mature enough to aborb more people at very senior level.
Institutes viz IIMs designed course like european standard (acad focused) and chose students like US standard (5+ exp mandatory and 9+ is avg exp). Rather than increasing fees each year, IIMs should focus over evolving exe-MBA and getting aligned to industry.
