ASER – The Source of Primary Education Statistics

While discussing Primary Education at XLRI last month, Dr. Rukmini Banerji, Director Pratham, presented lots of facts about how private and government primary schools are performing.

The source of these facts was ASER (Assessment Survey Evaluation Research) which provides   Annual Status of Education Report. ASER is set up by Pratham the largest NGO of India providing quality education to underprivileged children.

Pratham has been delivering to the society for last 15 years. ASER has been active since last 5 years. Its activities are funded by one of largest global IT firm.

ASER has very young team of members passionately dedicated to the cause of primary education. The links to details of the team are available here.

Dr. Rukmini Banerji is driving the initiative gradually and persistently across the nation and has also delivered lecture across the borders. One such speech delivered in Paris last year in which Pratham’s work has been described  –

How does ASER work? The team conduct detailed survey of each state through rigorous methodology. One such report on Uttaranchal can be seen here. The reports are truly valuable and have been appreciated by the education minister himself.
